I'm a huge sucker for anything Tart Workshop. Nelly Script, anyone? But Carrotflower Invitation Icons are too stinkin' cute not to share. 49 icons are included, and would look perfect on baby shower invitations, save the dates and thank you cards!

{tips} floral design for your wedding

Here, Emily (of www.pdxhomelife.com and www.songbirdfreelancedesign.com) talks with Hilary about what brides can do to make their day special.

Hilary Holmes created Emerald Petals, a little florists shop on Mississippi Avenue, and it's unlike any other flower shop you've been in. Peacock blue walls are awash with succulents, while driftwood, woolen containers, and Pacific Northwest native plants line the shelves. Focusing on sustainability, Emerald Petals nurtures a growing collection of vintage containers and found glass vases. All new containers offered at Emerald Petals are recycled products and/or made in the USA and can be reused. Hilary is thoughtful about her approach to floral design, and her attention to detail and love of local materials shines through.

You've been in the industry for 13 years - What got you started as an independent florist?

Its something that I'd always dreamed of. And everything about Portland said YES now, here! I fell in love with N. Mississippi, the opportunity arose, I took it and made it happen.

What is your design philosophy? do you encourage brides to use locally available materials? if so, why?

My design philosophy is to have fun, listen to how the flower lines flow, and be aware of how colors work off one another. I think it's important to always be aware of what is going on in the natural outside world and incorporate that. I prefer and definitely encourage the use of local flowers and foliage because it is just better all around. I like to see and touch the fresh flowers that's where most of my designs and ideas stem from.

You use a lot of succulents & distinctly sculptural qualities in your arrangements. How do you think these can be incorporated into bridal flowers like boutonnieres, bouquets, and table arrangements?
I think they incorporate quite nicely into wedding flowers. They give fabulous textures and colors. They are a wonderful non flower option and can be later planted for lasting memories.

What trends do you see in bridal flowers that you're excited about?
I definitely see a move in the sustainable direction. And texture, texture, texture! Like berries, cedar pine cones, succulents, tillandsia air plants, and vintage ribbons.

Any tips or advice for brides wanting unique floral arrangements for their day?
Do your research. There are so many options out there. You have to ask yourself, "What do you like? What best fits your style?" You can also think about what you can incorporate locally that will not only represent you but keep costs down! What personal touches can be added? Think about color, pattern, jewelry, favorite memories, vacations or hobbies for inspiration.

What materials are you looking forward to using as the spring and summer come on?
Local peonies, sunflowers and dahlias. Fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables.

What's your top advice to those planning wedding flowers and special event floral arrangements?

It always helps to talk to an experienced florist even if you want to do it all yourself. And it doesn't have to cost a fortune to hand over some or all of your wedding flower duties - especially if you use seasonal items! Your day should be simple, stress free and most of all a joyful time.

As it says on the Emerald Petals website, "Emerald Petals is Hilary's playhouse, a place she created so that a person can get a flower from another real person. A place where she can put creative arrangements in beautiful found objects. A shop that appreciates the little, simple joys of all things growing. She planted the seed for this little shop on Mississippi Avenue in Portland, Oregon, and is helping it grow with sweat, love and whole lot of dirt under her fingernails. Now she gets to watch it bloom."

The joy that Hilary finds in working with unique and locally sourced flowers and plants shines through in every arrangement she creates. For more inspiration from Hilary, visit emeraldpetalspdx.com and remember: to keep it simple and easy on your wedding day, think local, and have fun!

Matilde is a recently new font-find of mine. I love its friendly thin typeface with extra tall capitals, and the elegant look of its decorative elements. This typeface will work well for headings, short paragraphs, magazines, children’s books, posters, logos and any type of graphic design. Best of all? ITS FREE. F-R-E-E.

{tuesday shoesday} mismatched bridesmaids

When planning our wedding, my bridesmaids asked me if I wanted their shoes to match. I didn't, and I thought it was kind of odd that someone would even request that you all wear the same shoes.

When I came across this photo, it reminded me of why I didn't care what shoes my bridesmaids wore. They each have their own personalities, and I was happy that they were all wearing shoes that their either owned or were happy to purchase because they could wear them again.

{tips} to e-pics or not to e-pics

Leeann, from Leeann Marie Photography, is here to share a few tips today on engagement photos. Read on to see what Leeann has to say about choosing a photographer and having your e-pics taken!

You're so excited to be engaged, you're diving into planning your wedding, and now it's time to book your wedding photographer! Super exciting! While you're meeting with them, you're asked if you may be interested in taking engagement photos (or, e-pics). You may be unsure about shooting engagement photos, but from a photographer's perspective, they can be one of the best wedding investments you make! Why? There's a few big reasons:

Get to know your photographer:
Your wedding photographer will be with you from the time you put on your wedding dress through the reception dancing on your wedding day. It's a full day investment, and you want to make sure you know who exactly will be spending one of the most important days of your life with you! Getting together for engagement photos is a great way to get to better know your wedding photographer. Do you have a great relationship? Are you able to joke around together? Do they "get" you? All of these things are really important in creating absolutely beautiful wedding images. You'll be more willing to show yourself and your wedding dreams with someone you really trust.

Get out the jitters:
Engagement photos are a great way to also get out the "we're sooooo un-photogenic" jitters. Most of my clients tell me that they are un-photogenic, and if you looked through my portfolio, you'll probably not be able to tell who that might be! Give yourself more credit, but if you can't, shooting engagement photos is a great way to get out the photography jitters. For those of you who are uncomfortable in front of the camera, shooting a relaxed portrait session will help you to feel more comfortable in front of the camera. Get the jitters out, so that on the wedding day you're calm and relaxed.

Get to know what you love and what you hate:
Let's face it, we all have insecurities. Some of us are afraid of our noses, weight, the list goes on and on. Once you receive your engagement photos back from your photographer, you'll get a good idea of what you love and what you hate. Do you hate profile shots? Are you in love with that natural laughing photo? Tell your wedding photographer, so that they can best understand what will make you even happier on your wedding day, and you'll love your wedding photos more.

Get photos in your normal clothes:
You will be spending your entire wedding day in your dress and tuxedo. Your wedding photos will be gorgeous, but why not have some photos of you and your fiance in your "normal" clothes, still looking super cute and in love? You'll be able to look back on your engagement photos and feel all of the love and excitement that surrounded the building up to your wedding day.

If you've been going back and forth over whether or not to shoot engagement pictures, seriously consider it! You'll get to know your photographer, get out your jitters, learn what you love and hate in photos, and grow closer to your fiance before the wedding day even arrives!

{guest post} inspiration from glamour & grace

Hello! This is Megan from Glamour and Grace! The lovely Jen asked me to share a little something so I created this sweet vintage peach inspiration board for you all. I'm loving peaches and creams for spring and it is so much more romantic with lace details. A little bit of lace goes a long way, so use it smart. Work it in with the paper goods, like this vintage inspired invitation. I am swooning over these sweet DIY table numbers, just the perfect touch! And these lush garden rose centerpieces just add to the romance. Of course a fabulous lace gown is a must! This stunner from Anne Barge is so elegant. I love it paired with some sweet flats like these peach flower ones from Ruche.
